    Panamax locks: Dry bulk transits drive drop
    Transits via the Panamax locks fell 4.3% in December versus November, compared to a 19.3% sequential fall in November.


    Dry bulk shipping was the primary driver of declines yet again last month, with a 31% sequential drop in transits in December following a 47% sequential collapse in November.

    The fourth quarter marks the peak of U.S. exports of soybeans to Asia, with those volumes bolstered by continued exports of corn and wheat.

    Agribulk cargoes are carried aboard Panamax-size or smaller vessels due to terminal restrictions in both the U.S. Gulf and Asia.

    Panamaxes laden with U.S. farm exports shifted from Panama to the Suez Canal route in the fourth quarter of 2023. These ships have continued to ply this route despite attacks in the Red Sea, although diversions to the Cape of Good Hope are now starting to pick up, following attacks on two U.S.-owned bulkers in the past week.

    Nema tu nikakvih kontradiktornih informacija. Zaključak je da je tranzit bulkera kroz Panamski kanal Dec vs Oct manji za 63% ili 104 broda iako je prijevoz žita iz zaljeva u prosincu najveći. Znači da su svi ti brodovi išli dužim putem preko Atlantika povećavajući ukupan iznos prevezenih tonskih milja. A veći broj tonskih milja na sveukupnu svjetsku flotu znači više vozarine. Prosto ko pasulj.

    China's Steel Output Rebound Continues; Coastal Coal Freight Rates Up By Largest Amount Since Mid-December; RRR Cut Helpful But Not Needed For Dry Bulk

    • While it has been widely reported today that China has announced it will be lowering its reserve ratio requirements (RRR) for banks effective February 5th, much less widely reported today is that steel production is already continuing to rise. New data released from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) today shows that daily crude steel output at large and medium-sized mills averaged 2.09 million tons during January 11 - January 20. This is 3% higher than was seen during the first ten days of January and is up year-on-year by 8%. Significant is that this marks the highest production average seen since the middle of September, and the year-on-year growth is the highest seen since the middle of August.
    • It remains significant to us, and still not widely recognized among various experts and media, that China's steel output is faring this well despite various issues in China's economy. Similarly, China's overall dry bulk import demand remains quite strong. A major theme in our work last year was that huge excess in housing supply is not at all serving as a detriment to China's dry bulk import demand, and we remain bullish this year for China's demand regardless of the many issues that China is facing including the extreme housing oversupply. Reserve ratio requirements for banks being cut will only help to further assist various shipping and commodity markets.
    • Separately, also of note today is that Chinese coastal coal freight rates rose by 1.7%. This marks the largest increase seen since December 14th and is only the third time all year that rates have increased (rates increased by a small amount yesterday and on Monday).
