China's Major Dry Bulk Imports Set Record, Collectively Up 21% Y-O-Y In August

• China's import data for August has been released and shows that China's coal, iron ore, and soybean imports totaled a record 160.1 million tons. This is up month-on-month by 17.6 million tons (12%) and is up year-on-year by 27.3 million tons (21%). Overall, China's dry bulk commodity imports have remained strong throughout this year despite the unevenness in China's recovery. As we have continued to stress in our work, supply and demand of homes is not dictating China's dry bulk demand.

• China's coal imports totaled a record 44.3 million tons last month. This is up month-on-month by 5 million tons (13%) and is up year-on-year by 14.8 million tons (50%). Iron ore imports totaled 106.4 million tons. This is up month-on-month by 12.9 million tons (14%) and is up year-on-year by 10.2 million tons (11%). Soybean imports totaled 9.4 million tons. This is down month-on-month by 300,000 tons (-3%) but is up year-on-year by 2.2 million tons (31%). Looking forward, we continue to stress that there are still no signs that China's robust appetite for commodity imports is set to suddenly reverse.
