Complications and challenges
The main wave of BWT system installations is yet to come, says Olofsson. ‘Many owners rushed to have their IOPP renewals before the original implementation date of 8 September 2017 so they would effectively have a five-year grace period to install a system,’ he explains. ‘As a result, we should expect a demand peak in 2022.’ DNV GL believes as many as 15,000 BWTS will have to be installed at that time, he adds. ‘That is a lot of work. Even if we put our estimate at the lower end, assuming just 10,000 installations, this would still be equivalent to 192 system installations per week! John Banaszkiewicz, chair of the Baltic Exchange’s FFA Brokers Association and founder of Freight Investor Services, one of the biggest brokers of freight futures, gives an update on this often overlooked trade.
Funds that speculated on freight futures made returns of 100%, he says, as algorithmic and so-called black box or algo-trading are also helping to boost liquidity.
“It’s just like buying stocks and shares,” Banaszkiewicz tells Lloyd’s List.

Despite the falling rates over the recent weeks, the lag in Belship’s business means that when the spot markets fall, the outperformance will tend to be higher. The company communicated of a 77% of available ship days in 4Q to be booked at about USD 29,000 net per day (compared to USD 25,378 net per day during 3Q21). Around 42% of available ship days in the next four quarters are booked at about USD 25,500 net per day. Both these figures should be valued very positively, mostly meaning that the next year is deemed to be highly profitable even in the event of the rates not recovering to previous heights. The long-term future is bright as well – the orderbook of Supra/Ultramaxes is below 6% which is historically very low – we are heading towards the lowest rate of supply growth in 30 years.
