:) <3 :saint:

Steel Production Outside of China Sets New Record

    • Data released today shows global steel production outside of China set a new record in March. Production totaled approximately 75.2 million tons, which is up month-on-month by 9.8 million tons (15%) and up by 7.1 million tons (10%) from the 68.1 million tons that was reported last year for March 2020's production. The previous record was 74.9 million tons produced in March 2019.
    • Overall, it is very encouraging that global steel production outside of China has set a new record (total global steel production also set a record last month as China's own production has stayed very strong). Noteworthy is that production in the Middle East/Africa last month rose year-on-year by 17%, production in India rose year-on-year by 16%, production in the European Union and Russia each rose year-on-year by 13%, production in South Korea rose year-on-year by 6%, and production in Japan rose year-on-year by 1%.

Further Decline in Chinese Coal Port Stockpiles; Greater Strength in Chinese Coastal Coal Freight Rates

    • While global dry bulk spot freight rates have begun to surge again this week, also of note is that Chinese coastal coal freight rates have been finding a solid amount of support as well. Chinese coastal coal freight rates rose by 4% yesterday and by another 5% today. Prior to today, the last time that Chinese coastal coal freight rates rose by 5% or more was back in mid-March. As in the global market, coastal coal freight rates have been climbing due to strong demand and tightness in vessel availability. As we have been discussing in recent work, coal stockpiles at major northern ports in China have continued to decline. The amount of coal stockpiled at major northern ports in China has now fallen to 23.2 million tons. This marks the lowest amount stockpiled since February 23rd. Overall, near-term prospects in both the global dry bulk freight market and Chinese coastal freight market remain very promising.

Summer Coal and Power Shortage Warnings in China Have Already Begun

    • Back in early October, we first began warning of a likely winter coal shortage in China which ended up playing out as anticipated. We first discussed this issue in our October 5th Weekly China Report when China's Electricity Council began expressing warnings particularly for the northeast. Flash forward to today, what is very notable to us is that we have now seen our first warning of a possible summer shortage for both coal and electricity. Authorities in Zhejiang province (which is located on the eastern coast of China) have begun warning of a possible shortage of coal and electricity for this summer. Specifically, they have warned that July and August could experience tightness and shortages.
    • It is encouraging for the seaborne coal market that summer warnings have already begun. Also of note is that coal stockpiles at northern ports have also continued to decline. The amount of coal stockpiled at major northern ports in China has fallen today to 23.4 million tons. This is down by 700,000 tons (-3%) from the end of last week, down year-on-year by 4.2 million tons (-15%), and marks the lowest amount since February. Overall, coal import prospects are becoming more encouraging (coal and power shortages, of course, are not guaranteed and the warning is still preliminary). As we have also discussed in recent work, several accidents at Chinese coal mines have occured in recent days and there remains a chance that domestic coal production growth will be restrained to an extent due to regional and nation coal mine inspections and safety restrictions. Going forward, we will be continuing to monitor these issues very closely and will be continuing to publish updates.

Strength in Chinese Iron Ore and Soybean Imports; Improvement in Chinese Coal Imports

    • China imported 102.1 million tons of iron ore last month. This marks a month-on-month increase of 11.1 million tons (12%) and is up year-on-year by 16.2 million tons (19%). As we have continued to stress in our work, we remain very bullish for China's iron ore import prospects. Chinese steel production remains strong and iron ore production from the major global exporters is set to continue to grow.
    • China imported 27.3 million tons of coal last month. This marks a month-on-month increase of 6.7 million tons (33%)
    • China imported 7.8 million tons of soybeans last month. This marks a month-on-month increase of 1.1 million tons (16%) and is up year-on-year by 3.5 million tons (81%). We remain bullish for soybean import prospects going forward.
